100,000 young smokers in Quebec: The Youth Coalition Against Smoking invites adults to be more responsible

Nearly one-quarter of all high school students smoke, even though they cannot legally buy tobacco products! Alarmed by this situation, the 16 young members of the Youth Coalition Against Smoking Advisory Network, who are all between 15 and 17 years old, made an urgent appeal to the population of Quebec at a press conference held this morning in Montreal. Why are we, as a society, so hesitant to take responsibility for tobacco use by Quebec’s teens?

We’re off! Launch of the 2012 edition of Québec Tobacco-Free Week

People don’t always realize that smoking is the leading cause of avoidable death. In spite of this frightening statistic, quit attempts by smokers have declined by 13 percentage points in the last ten years, according to a new study by the Institut national de santé publique du Québec (INSPQ). This was one of the worrying observations made at the launch of Quebec Tobacco-Free Week.

This week, Quebec Tobacco-Free Week has a big surprise in store for you. Watch out for our shock ads, which will be unveiled on this site on Thursday, January 12, and will appear on television starting the following day. They emphasize the fact that smoking is still a major problem in Quebec in 2012, and has widespread effects. To be continued …

There are just six days left before the campaign begins. Here are some ideas to inspire your actions in the workplace:

  • Order  our 2012 posters and leaflets. It’s not too late!
  • Publish an article on Quebec Tobacco-Free Week in your company or organization newsletter.
  • Publicize your support for our campaign by posting an animated advertising banner on the homepage of your website or Intranet. Banners can be downloaded here.

Best wishes for a wonderful 2012

The entire team from the Quebec Council on Tobacco and Health extends its best wishes for a wonderful 2012, and hopes the New Year will bring you health and happiness. As January begins, we dedicate our thoughts to the people who are trying to quit smoking. According to a recent article, one-fifth of all Quebecers who made resolutions for the New Year have set themselves the goal of quitting smoking. We wish them courage and determination!
